Sourcing
We prefer original and primary material whenever practical. This includes official statements, court documents, legislation, company announcements, transcripts, public records and direct data. Secondary reporting is used to verify events, add independent context and identify disputes or missing information.
Anonymous source reporting should be used cautiously and only when the source publication has a credible record and the information is important to the story. We do not convert an anonymous or unverified claim into a fact simply because it has been repeated elsewhere.
Attribution and uncertainty
Claims by governments, militaries, armed groups, companies, activists, witnesses and political figures are attributed. If a material claim has not been independently verified, the article should say so.
Casualty figures, battlefield claims and intelligence assessments can change and may be disputed. The source of such figures should be identified clearly.
News, analysis and opinion
Straight news should report the relevant facts and competing documented claims without presenting the writer's political preference as a conclusion. Analysis may explain implications or patterns, but should make the analytical nature of the material clear. Opinion should be labeled as opinion.
Headlines and images
Headlines must be supported by the article. They should not overstate certainty, invent motives or turn a disputed allegation into a factual assertion.
Images should be relevant to the event or subject. File names, captions and alt text should describe what is actually shown. Illustrations or AI generated visuals should not be presented as documentary photographs of a real event.
Corrections
Material factual errors should be corrected promptly. Significant corrections should include a note explaining what changed. Minor spelling or formatting fixes do not require a correction note.
AI assistance
AI may assist editorial workflows, but it is not an authority. Published factual claims should be traceable to source material, and quotations, dates, numbers and names should be checked against reliable sources before publication.
