PA Organizes Deir Jarir “Olive Harvest” Event With Officials, International Volunteers and Planned Media Coverage

The Palestinian Authority is mobilizing participants for an “olive harvest” event in Deir Jarir, near Ramallah in Judea and Samaria, on Wednesday, October 21, at 8:30 a.m. International volunteers, public figures and senior Palestinian government officials are expected to attend, with extensive media coverage planned.

The PA’s official Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission is calling on Palestinians to join the gathering. Its involvement, together with the expected political attendance and media presence, places the event firmly within an organized political campaign surrounding the harvest.

The central concern is a planned provocation under the banner of agricultural work. The IDF must act before the gathering begins to prevent a confrontation.

Official Mobilization and International Attendance

The commission’s call extends participation beyond local farmers and their families. International volunteers and public figures are expected alongside senior Palestinian officials, bringing a wider political audience to the village.

The planned media coverage adds another dimension. Any confrontation could quickly reach audiences abroad, with images circulating before the circumstances have been established.

That makes advance preparation particularly important. Once a gathering involving officials, foreign volunteers and journalists is underway, managing access and separating groups becomes more complicated.

The Political Dimension of the Harvest

Olive harvesting provides the setting for the event, but the announced arrangements reach beyond collecting a crop. The combination of official mobilization, political attendance and extensive coverage gives the gathering a public campaigning role.

The concern is that agricultural activity will become the platform for an encounter whose consequences extend far beyond the grove. A dispute over access or movement could escalate into a confrontation, placing participants, nearby residents and security personnel at risk.

Preventing that outcome requires decisions about access and security before crowds arrive. Waiting until an encounter develops would leave soldiers managing an immediate confrontation in front of an already assembled media presence.

A Closed Military Zone Before the Event

The IDF should declare the relevant area a closed military zone in advance, with clearly communicated boundaries and entry conditions. Arrangements for legitimate harvesting needs should be addressed alongside those restrictions.

Security forces should establish where participants may gather, prevent opposing groups from approaching one another and document developments from the outset.

The event has an announced location, a scheduled starting time and an organized call for participation. The opportunity to prevent a confrontation is before Wednesday morning’s gathering begins.
