Los Angeles Arrest Reports Detail Alleged Threat Against Jewish Preschool

Reports published on October 17 describe an alleged plan to attack a Jewish preschool in the Los Angeles area. JNS and VINnews, citing the New York Post’s account of investigators’ allegations, said Steven Carlos Duenas, 51, was arrested on October 2 and that agents found components prosecutors alleged were intended for an incendiary device.

Reporting Date Differs From Arrest Date

The new coverage concerns an investigation and arrest earlier in October. According to the reports, federal agents searched the Los Feliz home the suspect shared with his mother. The articles do not describe an attack carried out at a preschool on October 17.

VINnews identified the alleged target as JEMS Preschool, affiliated with Chabad in the area. It is an early childhood institution, and the reports describe it as the purported target of threats. They do not report children being injured or an attack being completed there. Distinguishing alleged preparation from an actual attack is essential to understanding the case.

Posts and Materials at Issue

VINnews’s description of the criminal complaint says investigators attributed antisemitic social media statements and references to attacking the preschool to Duenas. JNS also reported alleged expressions of support for the Houthis and statements favoring the burning of synagogues, citing the original newspaper account.

These are allegations about material authorities attribute to the suspect, not findings established at trial. The description of components found at the home as intended for a Molotov cocktail likewise reflects prosecutors’ allegations as reported in the press. Explaining the seriousness of the case does not require describing those components or how to use them.

Allegations Still Require Proof

JNS said the New York Post described a court appearance following the arrest and a bail hearing. The outlet also reported that the Federal Bureau of Prisons listed a person with the same name and age at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.

An arrest and legal proceedings are not a conviction. Prosecutors must establish their case through the judicial process, and the suspect retains the presumption of innocence. Allegations of an intended mass attack are particularly serious, but their seriousness does not erase the distinction between suspicion, purported evidence and a court’s findings.

A Family Response

JNS carried comments the suspect’s mother gave the New York Post describing his character and childhood positively. Her response conveys a family member’s position on the allegations. It does not itself resolve the claims concerning the attributed posts or the seized materials.

A neighbor dispute mentioned in the coverage also does not establish motive. A biographical detail or relative’s description should not become an unsupported explanation for the alleged conduct. Questions about intent, context and responsibility belong to the evidence and proceedings rather than assumptions drawn from a media interview.

A Jewish Institution as the Alleged Target

The alleged targeting of a Jewish preschool, alongside the antisemitic content attributed to the suspect, is the central public interest in the case. The reports focus attention on children’s safety and community institutions without establishing a new immediate threat or assigning responsibility to a broader group.

The latest development is the publication of allegations and details from the proceedings. The case’s progress will determine which claims are tested in court and what findings follow. Until then, the accurate description remains a reported arrest involving serious allegations, rather than a conviction or a completed attack.

VINnews reported that he was expected to return to court on November 10. That is the next appearance described in the reporting, rather than an announced judicial outcome.
