UK Police Make Seventh Arrest in RAF Fairford Terror Investigation

A seventh person is now in custody in Britain’s inquiry into suspicious activity around RAF Fairford. On October 6, counterterrorism officers detained a British man aged 22 in central London’s Westminster district, and the six men held earlier are out on police bail.

With this arrest, the case has moved well past the first police response at the Gloucestershire base on September 27. A home in the same London district was searched too, but police have said nothing about what, if anything, they found there.

What Police Have Confirmed

According to Counter Terrorism Policing, the 22 year old is suspected of getting ready to commit terrorist acts, which is an offense under the fifth section of Britain’s 2006 terrorism law. Reuters said in its October 6 report that he was still being held.

Vicki Evans, who coordinates counterterrorism policing nationally, called the inquiry live and complicated, with detectives following several lines of investigation. Officers had not yet established what motivated the activity close to the airfield.

Being arrested on suspicion is not the same as being charged or convicted. Police did not say the seventh man had been charged, and they have not published a full picture of any planned attack.

How the Arrests Developed

The first five arrests came on September 27, when vehicles near RAF Fairford drew attention. All five men are British. Reuters reported that officers found petrol in the vehicles but no explosive device.

On October 1, police in Westminster detained a sixth man, aged 25, who holds both British and Iranian citizenship. He was later released on bail. By the time of the October 6 statement, every one of the six earlier suspects was on bail and the inquiry was still running.

The man arrested on October 6 is not the one held on October 1. Each man’s date of arrest, age and citizenship should be kept distinct, since the inquiry now covers detentions at several locations over a span of more than a week.

The Iran Connection Remains an Investigative Question

According to Reuters, US officials who were not named said investigators were looking at whether Iran had planned an attack using drones. Tehran has denied any role. British police say they are keeping every possibility open, foreign state involvement included.

These reports explain why the case is followed far beyond Britain, but they do not show who gave the suspects instructions or how any strike was supposed to be carried out. Police have not said they recovered working drones from the group, and they have reached no public conclusion about who was behind it.

American military aircraft use Fairford, which gives the case weight outside Britain. For readers in Israel, the point of interest is that investigators are examining whether Iran threatened an American military facility, though nobody has yet been shown to be responsible.

Bomber Redeployment Predated the New Arrest

In a separate step, the Pentagon confirmed that the US bombers based at Fairford had flown back to their home bases. Vance, the American vice president, called this a precaution, and ITV reported fears of an attack by several drones at once.

The bombers left before the seventh man was arrested. Their departure should not be seen as a reaction to anything learned from him, and on its own it does not confirm the attack scenario that was reported.

Specialist officers will keep investigating what happened and why, police said. As of the police statement on October 6, the newest confirmed facts were the additional arrest and the property search, while a final public explanation of the case had still not been given.
