Two Men Remanded in Manchester Jewish Community Plot Case

Two Iranian nationals appeared in a London court on October 3 over an alleged terrorist plot targeting Manchester's Jewish community and were remanded in custody. Reuters reported that Rahman Salehi, 34, and Salam Ahmadyan, 36, did not enter pleas and are due at the Old Bailey on October 23.

The court appearance followed charges announced by Metropolitan Police on October 2. The prosecution's account is an allegation that must be tested in legal proceedings, and neither the charges nor the custody decision amounts to a finding of guilt.

Charges Follow September Arrests

Police said the men were arrested in Newton Street in Manchester on September 20. They were subsequently taken to a London police station, and officers searched addresses in Liverpool and Salford as part of the investigation.

The charge concerns preparation for terrorist acts under section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Police described allegations involving research into potential targets, reconnaissance and acquiring material connected with an explosive device. The account does not require publication of technical construction details to explain the alleged offense.

An Overseas Connection Is Alleged

Reuters reported that prosecutors alleged contact with a third party believed to be operating from Iran. That is a prosecutorial assessment about the alleged coordinator's location. It does not by itself establish direction by the Iranian government or identify a state institution as responsible.

The prosecution also described surveillance of Jewish sites in Manchester. Details presented during an initial hearing remain part of the case against the defendants, rather than facts established after a trial. The scheduled proceedings will provide the forum in which evidence and any defense can be examined.

Police Address Community Concerns

In their October 2 statement, counterterrorism officers said they did not believe there was an ongoing public threat connected with this investigation. Greater Manchester Police said visible policing and engagement with Jewish communities would continue.

The police statement acknowledged the sensitivity of the announcement during the Jewish holiday period and around the anniversary of the Heaton Park synagogue attack. Those circumstances help explain community concern, but the earlier attack and the current allegations are distinct events.

A Separate Investigation From Fairford

British counterterrorism police said the Manchester case was not connected to the investigation concerning RAF Fairford. That distinction is particularly important because both cases have generated reporting about possible Iranian connections.

No conviction or final assessment of responsibility was announced in the material reviewed. The next reported hearing is on October 23 at the Old Bailey, while police said some inquiries were continuing. Until further evidence is heard, reporting should distinguish the arrests and charges, which are documented procedural events, from the alleged plan and overseas involvement, which remain for investigation and adjudication.
